Working Ergonomically

  1. Take frequent breaks from typing.
  2. When typing, keep hands relaxed and fingers gently curved. Your hands should float easily above the keyboard. Allow wrists to rest on a wrist rest during preparations for the next entry, not when typing. Avoid extended wrist positions.
  3. If you doctor recommends cold therapy, put the wrist rest or cold therapy treatment in the freezer for two hours.
  4. Use a chair that offers firm lumbar support at waist level.
  5. Upper arms should be vertical and close to the body; elbows should form a 90 degree angle, allowing the forearms to rest parallel to the floor. Don't elevate shoulders.
  6. Sit with good posture without being too rigid; avoid slouching or leaning forward.
  7. Monitor should be at eye level or slightly lower. Keyboard and monitor should be directly in front of you, not off to the side.
  8. With back slightly straight, knees should be at an open angle (at least 90 degree) and slightly lower than hips. Keep feet on the floor or foot rest.
